U.S. Government Unveils BRAIN Initiative

In April of this year, President Obama unveiled plans for a $100 million research project called the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies, or BRAIN Initiative. The project’s aim is to develop new technologies that will assist in the study and analysis of the brain and its functions. Scientists involved in the project have expressed hope that it will help them better understand how the brain manages information and retains memories and how it ultimately impacts how we think and behave.

In his announcement, President Obama expressed optimism that a better scientific understanding of the brain will help conquer some of the current battles that victims face when dealing with brain diseases or traumatic brain injuries.

In this regard, traumatic brain injuries continue to be a significant public health issue in the United States. According to research cited by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, traumatic brain injuries are a factor that contributes to almost a third of all injury-related deaths in the United States. In addition, approximately three out of four traumatic brain injuries that occur each year are concussions or other mild forms of the injury.

The BRAIN Initiative has mostly been met with praise and optimism from brain researchers.  Critics, however, argue that government involvement in this type of endeavor may prove to be an ineffective approach and that additional government spending on this project, even though it is an important one, is a bad policy decision for difficult economic times.

A traumatic brain injury can have devastating effects on the lives of the injured and their loved ones. If negligent or intentional conduct caused your injury, finding an experienced traumatic brain injury lawyer is an important step in receiving just compensation. The attorneys at Larsen, Larsen, Nash & Larsen are dedicated to providing support to the victims of traumatic brain injuries.
